SYONA  port fairy
  Brisbane to Port Fairy 2004

SYONA is the most recent addition to the fleet at Port Fairy.

Recently purchased by Tony Cassidy, he has assembled a crew of four to sail SYONA from it's present home, Brisbane, to Port Fairy. They will depart on 19th of November, 2004.

The cruise, of about 900NM, is expected to take eight days in good conditions. In reality, it will probably take about two weeks.

The crew consists of:
Tony Cassidy (Port Fairy),
John Neilson
(Williamstown),
Ian Anderson
(Port Fairy) and
Jackson Urie
(Frankston).

The crew will be keeping you updated on their voyage; internet access permitting of course.

For instance, do you have any factual information to contribute to this Site? We'll take fiction too. Golly, considering what little info we're receiving from the boat, we'll accept anything. All we're hearing about is Bar-Bs, snooker and beer.

SKIPPER - TONY CASSIDY

Tony began sailing as a small child around the Melbourne bayside suburbs where he lived.

As a young adult he sailed competively on Albert Park Lake ...a very good training ground for picking wind shifts..competing in many state and national titles..

Shifting from smaller craft to a 14' skiff was a shift from tactical sailing to speed and power. Tony spent around 7 years with the 14’s and moved to a Diamond..after that an Adams 10 sailing out of Hobsons Bay.

There seems to be a pattern of bigger boats with bigger sails...his purchase of Syona is a complete turnarond in direction. She is a meticulously maintained veteran with stylish fifties lines and made of wood! what is he thinking...actually he probably wasnt thinking this is love..open the computer at work there is always a photo up on the screen...this will be a boat for enjoying rather than racing..many picnics are planned.

We want you here for those pre christmas drinks.

JOHN NEILSON

John is an experienced ocean racer with wins in events such as the Melbourne to Hobart West Coast (480 nautical miles)and The Rudder Cup race from Melbourne to Davenport.

JACKSON URIE

Jack finished his VCE exams on Monday and flew to Brisbane Thursday, 18th to join SYONA. A planned stop at Surfers Paradise will not be unwelcome for Jack - SCHOOLIES !!.

He has been sailing since he was about eight years old; first in his parent’s ‘Gwen’ then his own ‘Sabot’. Remember them?

He is currently a member of the Frankston Yacht Club where he races his ‘Laser’.

This is his first opportunity to join an extended ocean voyage.

The editors would like to remind the remainder of the crew that Jack has not quite turned 18 yet and, no matter what, he can NOT be elected the ‘designated driver’.

IAN ANDERSON

Ian is a resident of Port Fairy with many years experience sailing the open seas, but on a fishing trawler rather than a yacht.

Perhaps after this trip we will see more of him out on Port Fairy Bay during Saturday racing.

It’s probably best not to make any comment about the boots or the size of the fish.
